Lyrics

Lyrics will be hosted here. All are presented in two ways: Interpretive (or sing-along) translations and direct translations. Interpretive ones will take 'wider swings', aiming to match rhythm, rhyme and meter while conveying the overall flow of subject material, occasionally making changes; direct translations will attempt to present everything as straightforwardly as possible. Translation is always tricky and usually very personal, but I hope including both approaches covers most questions that might pop up. I aim to provide cultural footnotes as well as translation footnotes. If there's anything I've misinterpreted or something I seem to have missed that isn't covered here, please let me know. Ostrobothnian as a dialect is very new to me, and I'm doing my best to keep up with it. That said, the lack of on-internet documentation of the dialect leads to some wild moments -- I recently looked up 'hööfaluten' to make sure I'd gotten it right, and while most Google results led straight back to the lyrics of the song, one of them led to an academic thesis which discussed the word and used it in context! Great! The thesis turned out to be Jakob's, from 2019, writing about their then-current musical Gambämark. It's a small world.
